I don't pretend to understand most of the numbers that these guys come up
with, however, the bottom line message from this little snippet from
BaseballHQ is clear enough. . .
Jays turn Batista back into a closer...Late in 2004, the Blue Jays tried
Miguel Batista </subscribe/cgi-local/playerlinkpitcher2.pl?id=46>  (RHP,
TOR) in the closer's role. Early this off-season, it seemed that they were
unhappy with the results, since Batista was pencilled back into the rotation
when they were unable to land a front-line starter. Last week, Toronto
surprisingly moved Batista back into the closer's role.
A look at his BPIs shows that Batista doesn't have the skills to be a
closer:
Year Ctl Dom Cmd hr/9 BPV
=======  ===  ===  ===  ====  ===
2001     3.9  5.8  1.5  0.8   51
2002     3.4  5.5  1.6  0.6   54
2003     2.8  6.6  2.4  0.6   73
2004     4.4  4.7  1.1  1.0   22
---------------------------------
2004 1H  4.2  5.7  1.3  0.6   51
2004 2H  4.5  3.6  0.8  1.4   -9
Batista faded badly in the second half last year, walking more batters than
he struck out. As the Forecaster points out - closers should have pinpoint
control with high dominance and command, and ideally have BPVs over 100.
These are not the BPIs of a closer.
Over the last three years, Batista has primarily been a starter, throwing
only 29 innings in relief. But a look at some other splits shows that he's
ill suited to relief:
      2002-2004         OBA   OPS
======================  ====  ====
pitches 1-15            .288  .811
pitches 16-30           .251  .713
pitches 31-45           .246  .681
runners on              .273  .737
runners in scoring pos .284 .779
