DETROIT -- The _Detroit Tigers_
(http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/clubhouse?team=det) acquired first baseman _Sean Casey_
(http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/profile?statsId=5930) from the _Pittsburgh Pirates_
(http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/clubhouse?team=pit) on Monday in exchange for minor league
pitcher Brian Rogers.
Casey, a career .304 hitter, gives the AL Central-leading Tigers the
left-handed-hitting presence they have lacked as they head toward a playoff berth.
To make room for Casey, Detroit optioned the contract of first baseman
_Chris Shelton_ (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/profile?statsId=7259) to
Triple-A Toledo. Shelton is hitting .277 with 16 home runs and 45 RBI.

Chris Shelton was no magic bean. He was the epitome of the "real" major
league talent that COPS touts as the be all and end all of rotisserie
transactions. Well, DUMP says buyer beware this "real" talent. DUMP has been quietly
advising its members to stay far away from Rule 5 bums like Shelton and
one-year wonders like Jhonny Peralta. Real baseball talent, no matter how
inexperienced, always rules in the end. Not to say that there aren't exceptions
(see, e.g. the man formerly known as the King), but let this be a lesson to all
of you COPS naysayers.

That is all.
