The importance, of course, would largely be on draft day.  After the player gets a game in the field during the season, he can be placed in his position.
 
I have long advocated permissive slotting on draft day, so that someone like Delluci could be placed on reserve at the start of the season.  However, as best I can recall, no one has ever joined me in this opinion.

We have never considered what it means to appear as a pinch hitter but not take the field.  Anyone can circulate a proposed rule change in the off season.  Mark Blocker typically coordinates the calendar for such things.  Are you suggesting that if Ortiz appears at less than 20 games at 1B then he should qualify there even though he'll have appeared at more than 20 as a DH?

I think this is a crazy ruling.   By this thinking Dellucci only would qualify now at UT because he has pinch hit more than play the field..   Doubt I'd keep Ortiz at near $40 but I think a player should qualify at whatever defensive position he plays most if in fact he doesn't hit 20 games at any one defensive slot. 
  
How about this as well.....I watched the other night as Toronto put on a shift and in doing so moved Hinske in short right field (from his 3B slot)....does that make nim a 2nd baseman??
