Rodriguez's 3-Run Homer in 9th Lifts Yankees Past Indians 8-6
2007-04-19 17:04 (New York)

By Bob Bensch
     April 19 (Bloomberg) -- Alex Rodriguez hit a three-run
homer to cap a six-run, two-out rally in the bottom of the ninth
inning as the New York Yankees beat the Cleveland Indians 8-6.
All of the runs came off Cleveland closer Joe Borowski and
gave New York a three-game sweep at Yankee Stadium. Jason Giambi
and Josh Phelps also hit homers for New York.
Phelps began the rally with a solo homer to left. Derek
Jeter and Bobby Abreu added run-scoring singles, and Rodriguez
ended the game with his homer to center field.
It was the Major League Baseball-leading 10th homer of the
season for Rodriguez and his second game-ending blast. He hit a
grand slam in the bottom of the ninth to beat Baltimore 10-7 on
April 7.
Rodriguez also leads the majors with 26 runs batted in, and
has hit in all 14 games this season and 19 in a row going back
to the end of 2006.
In Toronto, the Boston Red Sox also rallied late, scoring
twice in both the eighth and ninth innings to beat the Blue Jays
5-3.
Manny Ramirez hit a two-run homer in the top of the eighth,
his first of the season, to tie the game 3-3. Alex Cora had an
RBI triple and Coco Crisp followed with a sacrifice fly in the
ninth.
Frank Thomas and Alex Rios hit solo home runs for Toronto.
Mike Timlin picked up the win in relief for Boston, while
Jonathan Papelbon earned his fourth save. Shaun Marcum allowed
two runs in two-thirds of an inning in relief for the loss.
In the National League, Jamie Moyer took a shutout into
the ninth inning and Aaron Rowand hit a solo homer as the
Philadelphia Phillies beat the Washington Nationals 4-1, while
J.J. Hardy homered and drove in four as the Milwaukee Brewers
beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 7-5.
