[USML Announce] No-hitters--it's only rock 'n roll

You know what they say about how in every joke there's a seed of truth. Well, Brad Lee's little joke contained more than a seed.

At the insistence of my law school roomate and to satisfy a sense of curiosity about what this whole Grateful Dead thing was all about, I agreed to attend a GD concert at Joe Louis Arena in Detroit. I remember two things distinctly: 1) I still wonder what a goony bird hit is (they were readily available for $5 a piece) and 2) attending a Grateful Dead concert stone cold sober is not recommended. They sucked. Somehow no one else seemed to notice though. I assume it had something to do with the goony bird hits.

Rick--we need an essay on that one. For my taste, they also were one of the better bands for listening and nodding off to at home with a head between headphones (see Physical Graffiti). I can't state what the best concert was I ever saw (although the reunited Blasters at Fitzgerald's a couple years back was unforgettable, as any number of the many Dylan shows I've seen), but for the 70s the Who at the Auditorium in fall '71 still rings in my ears.

Jeffrey, lighten up a bit with some humor a guy like you could maybe appreciate:
    Q: What did the Grateful Dead fan say when he wasn't stoned?
     A:  God, these guys suck.

Greetings;
     I can see young Jim Barrett's puzzled look now - Old Comiskey? Int'l Ampitheater? And what are these Stones and Beatles you speak of?;-)
   Rick
p.s. Best concert ever? Led Zeppelin at spankin' brand new Market Square Arena in 1975.

Cubs...Holtman...big deal. On 11/22/69 I saw the Stones at the old International Amphitheater. Show delayed a while cos opening act Chuck Berry demanded cash before going on stage. Remind me to someday tell you lads about the '65 Beatles concert I saw at Old Comiskey--after I have my prune juice....
