[USML Announce] USML - Cubs connection ?

Tom's brother Pete (who also had a USML team in 1989) was my roommate in college (Univ. of Chicago).? Tom also went to UofC and he and I got to be friends through Pete.? Since then, I have represented Tom's company in litigation, and worked on Pete's unsuccessful Senate campaign, but those are both way after-the-fact in this story.? Neither are lawyers.

When the league was first founded, many of the owners were college friends, or friends of my college friends who worked at Lexecon, and some of us were from sidley.? I think about half of the league ownership in 1989 worked at Lexecon.? Over the next few years, many of the "Lexecon owners" were replaced with "Sidley owners" (including you) and I know you know the history from there.

Thanks for asking, so that I had an excuse to take a trip down (a very?pleasant) memory lane.

For League historians:

The Tribune carried an article today on page 1 of the business section announcing a new group has been formed that is seeking to purchase the Cubs.? The group mainly consists of members of the Ricketts family (which owns TD Ameritrade), and is led by Tom Ricketts.? Some of you may recognize Tom's name as a former USML owner.? Tom owned a team in the inaugural USML season of 1989, along with his college?friend Dave Wilson.? If you go to the usml.net website, click on "prognosticators alley" then click on "memory lane," then click on the "1989 final standings," you will discover that the "Dave/Tom" team finished a distant 8th out of 11 USML teams (to the eventual 1989 Champion Block's Bombers).? For all of the USML Cubs fans, lets hope that if the Ricketts Family does acquire the Cubs, they can do better than that !
