You are the king of emoticon's -- that's for sure. (well done)

The trade is interesting too. (I think I like what you got more than what
you gave, but I don't dare quibble with anything Rick does -- he has proven
himself to be a very smart guy.)

I remain in utter denial about the state of my pitching staff and total
shock and delight about my offense (which continues to hum along nicely even
without A-Rod, Posada, a hole at middle infield and at least one hole in the
outfied).

Mark (and the rest of the league),

I believe my intended point has been misconstrued. I recognized Mark K's
comments for what they were. He was busting my balls and trying to get a
little action on the USML listserv going. I didn't read his comments to
suggest that the deal was underhanded or unfair. To the contrary, he was
merely indicating his opinion that this trade, like every other trade Rick
makes, will end up working out in Rick's favor. I suppose my response can
be more clearly expressed with an emoticon:

My comment about skepticism is, ironically, very similar to Mark B.'s
comment about wishing that there were more trades like this. I do think the
league membership is skeptical about trades that are designed to benefit
both teams for the current season for two reasons: (1) the trading
philosophy in the league is to "win" the trade as opposed to making a trade
that should work out for both participants and (2) because its so easy to
end up looking like a fool if you guess wrong (i.e. trading away Carlos
Quentin). That was the only point I was trying to make. But for what its
worth - there are devils lurking in the shadows and they go by the names of
Andy and Mark.

That is all.

Jeff:

I am only responding to your last point, about USML skepticism. I think
you are seeing shadows that aren't there. I could be wrong, but I doubt you
will hear anybody question the fairness of this particular trade. It looks
pretty even to me, with risks and rewards on both sides, and I think
Kerber's point was just that he thinks it will come out better for Gammons
(and hey, what doesn't?). In my own view of the world, I wish there were
more trades like this one, but our rules and league composition really
discourage it. Kudos to you and Rick on an interesting trade.

P.S. Call me about Putz (and yes I know this is a league-wide message)

I'm afraid that as The King I'm not able to let this kind of insolence go
unchallenged.

As much as I'd like to see Rick do well with Carlos Pena, there's a reason
why I was willing to trade him away:

He's 17-76 (.223), 3HR, 8 RBI, 8 Runs and 0 SB's for the month of May.

If you go back to April 13th, after his hot start, he's 26-126 (.206), 3HR,
10 RBI, 12 Runs and 0 SB's for the entire period from April 13th on. That's
more than a month of dreadful production that doesn't seem to be turning
around.

He's got a big contract and its not like he won't get the playing time, but
this isn't the same guy who hit 45 home runs last year. If Kerber wants to
wager on whether "Pena gets back at least close to his '07 form", I hereby
accept the bet - at any amount of wager.

George Sherrill, like any closer on a bad team, could very well get traded.
But its not like Baltimore has any good alternatives. Chris Ray won't be
coming off of TJ surgery until the fall and he wasn't very good to begin
with. And there's absolutely no one else in that pen who has any business
being given the ball in the 9th inning. Sherrill is cheap, he's effective
and Baltimore is actually winning a few games.

There's also the point that with Pena on my roster I was forced to sit
either Thomas or Millar. I can now play both of them and move Gload into
what was a dead slot occupied by Donnie Murphy.

All in all, I'm happy with the trade. But it does go to show you that our
league has some work to do with respect to non-dump trading. As I
suspected, USMLers are skeptical of any trade that is an attempt to address
the needs of both teams for the current season.

That being said - anyone want JJ Putz for the next two years?

That is all.

I say Gammons just drank Winick's milkshake. I say Pena gets back at least
close to his '07 form and Sherrill gets traded at the deadline and doesn't
close anymore. End result--Winick gives up a boatload of offense for about
10 saves.

In an effort to prove:

1. Not all big trades need to be dump trades, and

2. The Berliners are able to make a major trade with someone other than the
RipTorns

The Hoosier Daddies and the Win Ick Ben Ein Berliners announce the following
mutually beneficial transaction:

Hoosiers trade George Sherrill ($2,Y2) and Ross Gload to the Berliners

Berliners trade Carlos Pena ($2,Y2) and Scott Downs to the Hoosier Daddies

That is all.
