[USML Announce] Eric (Mr. B) Karabell on How Kerber Screwed Winick and Robbins

That’s what I’m talking about! Yes, I am happy now.

And I think you’re cutting Rodgers too much slack. Let’s take a look at the evidence:

1. He’s a little guy who has done FAR (or is that Favre) better than expected.

2. He’s good buddies with Ryan Braun.

3. He was entirely too aggressive in defending his friend against the charges of steroid use (maybe he felt like it struck a little close to home?).

I say where there’s smoke, there’s fire. Let’s hope that someone is looking into Mr. Rodgers and his choice of “supplements.”

Jeff

Castro and Rizzo- two .240 hitters as building blocks. Wait til next year (step, repeat, step, repeat). Oh wait, sorry, I am not supposed to be ripping them anymore.

SCREW YOU RYAN BRAUN AND YOU TOO YOU APOLOGIST RODGERS!! (happy now, Jeff? I feel better).

You're definitely wrong about Theo. Apparently you need to stop reading the White Sox blogs and/or discussing baseball with Doug. Give Theo a break.

First of all, the Krause analogy is entirely unfair. In fact, it's just stupid. Theo never announced that it was "organizations that win championships." He just went out there and built a winning team and brought winning baseball to Boston after a long drought. The accolades have been thrown in his direction by others. He wasn't the one taking credit.

Second, Theo won in Boston because he put together a great minor league system that allowed him to fill slots, make some trades and then pay up for the big bats. In particular, he won because he built a system that delivered guys like Papelbon and Pedroia and Ellsbury and Lester. And signing David Ortiz was a pretty smart move as well.

As for Garza, if you believe the blogs, the Cubs did make a run at trying to sign him and it became clear that he wanted to test the market. And they can still sign him after the season is that's what they want to do. But if they're going to pay nearly $20 million a season for a pitcher I'd rather they go out and chase the likes of Clayton Kershaw in 2015 when they might actually be able to score some runs for him.

And why the doom and gloom. Rizzo and Castro are "supposed" building blocks? Are you disappointed in Kris Bryant too? Almora? Baez? Soler? It sucks to have another lousy season, no doubt. But for the first time in years, there is reason for optimism.

I'll grant that Theo seemed to get what he could in the trade -- Garza is a free agent, so it was get something now or get nothing if Theo was determined not to sign Garza to a new deal.

But why not sign him? He's still relatively young, and the Cubs have a good core of starters plus two of their supposed building blocks (Rizzo and Castro) in place. The idea that good players in their late 20s are too old for the Cubs' competitive horizon is depressing.

I'll stand by my Jerry Krause analogy. The Bulls stumbled into Jordan (thank you, Portland!) And Krause made one good deal (for Pippin). Then he thought he was smarter than everyone else and ran the franchise into the ground after Jordan left. Theo stumbled into a championship in Boston (not by dumping for five years and signing teenagers, but by buying decent ballplayers), and now he's like Krause in annointing himself a genius and playing wild games with his new toy franchise. I hope I'm wrong, but can't see it ending well ...

I think it's ridiculously early to be making any judgements--either postitive or negative--on Theo's progress with the Cubs. The farm system was truly abysmal when he got here and he's never made it any secret that fixing it was going to take more than a couple of years. I'll stand by my comments on the Garza trade--the Cubs will get either four or five prospects, of which either two or three were ranked in the Rangers top 30 pre-season (depending on how the Cubs choose to structure the deal), and another is a young major league pitcher with a decent arm. (And none of that is my "spin." It's just who the guys are.) They got that in return for an upcoming free agent that they weren't going to re-sign.

Doug--if you're such an expert, how about if you name two or three deadline trades in the past few years where the selling team got a comparably graded set of prospects, based on what was known about them at the time of the trade? (No fair cherry-picking a couple that happened to turn out well in hindsight.) It shouldn't be hard for you to do that--unless you're just blowing smoke.

OK - I'm in on returning to Packer-bashing. But I'm frustrated with the Theo Era, which is destined to end like the post-Jordan Jerry Krause Era for the Bulls when we were told to be patient and wait for the the high school twin towers of Chandler Tyson and Eddy Curry to lead the team to back to glory.

On the Packer front, has Rodgers issued his Braun defense yet? I recall him being incredibly vociferous on this point last year ...

It's history because the guys playing in the majors aren't doing as well as the re-treads and bums that the Cubs are putting on the field. That doesn't speak well of the Sox minor league system. Sure, they're young, but they're also not producing.

But that discussion is now "history". Lets get on to bashing on the evil team up north.

I’ll move on but why is it history when the guys playing in the majors are from the very system you want to bash? Plus is it “history” really if they’re all in the young-to-mid-20’s??? “History” has been a lot more kind to the South Side for one reason: a World Series ring in our lifetime. Despite all the fancy bridges and hotels promised to you by Brothers Ricketts and Epstein, I wouldn’t plan a parade route just yet.

However, in the spirit of camp opening this Thursday, I will join you and begin swinging at Blocker and Fruiter—Packers suck. Time for camp, so put on your trunks and let’s start talking up Alshon Jeffery!!!

Why is it always history with a White Sox fan? What's in the system now? (Short answer: "nothing"). Sure, the Sox won a World Series. That's now ancient history. The team is worse than the Cubs, which is one hell of an accomplishment and as opposed to the Cubs, doesn't appear to have a plan for turning things around.

(Andy, I blame you for this - look what you've done. Now get on board before it's too late.)

Go Cubs!!

Doug - how about we bury the hatchet, agree to disagree on this whole Cubs/Sox thing and get back to bashing the fricking Packers? Deal?

Our minor leagues has produced more than yours over the past 10 years. I love when people bash the Sox farm system which has produced Ramirez, Beckham (hey, he’s hitting .320 just in time to go on the DL for me!), Sale, Santiago, Reed, Jones, Tank (jury still out there), a trade leading to minor leaguer Quintana….oh wait, you have that ex-Notre Damer and Castro, I guess you have a better argument.

Can't wait to see what the Sux get for Peavy, Rios and Ramirez to go with their complete dearth of talent in the minors.

And Andy, you need to stop feeding the wolves (i.e. Doug). I know he's family but you simply can't lend a helping hand to a Cubs basher. It'll get you drummed out of the Cubs Club.

That is all.

I love Kerber buying the pr spin: “decent to good prospects.” Keep stockpiling and focusing on those renovations which will help bring you to the promised land. What a joke.

I'm thinking more Gary Scott. Or maybe Carmen Fanzone (not that Skippy would get that reference ...)

True on the Klein-related news. But, listen, Brad Lee had already stocked my offensive roster with Dayan "Hank Aaron" Vicieo and Lonnie "Mike Schmidt" Chisenhall ...

And as a Cub fan, I wish Theo well with Mike "Miguel Cabrera" Olt. I see that he has broken the Mendoza Line line in AAA, which must count for something ...

In further, Mark Blocker related news, another ESPN writer, Jerry Crasnick, explains why Greg Holland is the most dominant closer in baseball:

In non Mark Blocker related news, I was informed by Brad Lee that he did, in fact, seek out Dean Klein during his efforts to prematurely bail on young Wil Myers and that the Professor proclaimed that he much preferred two pitchers to Willie "Mays" Myers. What is the world coming to? Andy "Mr. $1 Pitcher" Klein more interested in pitchers (including a bean!!!) than in a stud hitter. Say it aint so!!
