[USML Announce] The Curse of Sanchez

Thanks, Jeff. It looks like SBA/PA slow down somewhat late in the year, but because there are more PAs, an equal or greater number of steals. And it looks like the success rate significantly increases in September (which makes no sense, although I suppose you are playing a lot of back-up catchers/pitchers by that point). I think this data totally debunks my impressionistic view. Where does the data come from?

Mark,

The most recent data I could find was from 2012. But it appears that they stay fairly constant throughout the year, though it does appear that slow down a little bit in August and September.

Not getting involved in this debate, but something I always wondered about: does the number of stolen bases on the whole decline over the course of the year? This is purely impressionistic on my part, but it seems to me many fewer bases get stolen after the all-star break, especially in September when teams are out of it (and don’t want to risk injury). Thoughts? Or better yet, data?

Wait a minute indeed.

On pace to steal 15-20? Not so fast. He stole 4 bases in his first 9 game. He has stolen 4 bases since then (in 46 games). Better yet, he has been caught stealing on 4 of his last 5 attempts. Combine that with the fact that he’s on pace for 27 rbi and I figure he’s just about worth his $1 salary.

Wait a minute ... when the deal was announced, Kerber said I "could have had" King Felix. Not sure how that would have happened, but glad I didn't have to swallow those 8 runs in 1/3 of an inning.

Laugh at Iglesias if you want. But he's on pace to hit above .300 with 15-20 steals. Not saying he's the next coming of Derek Jeter. But at $1 Y1, he has the prospect of being undervalued by double-digits.

In any event, beware the boomerang curse, Mark K. You've now heard the risks from Mr. Winick himself. :)

Worse--a Y2 pitcher with a bum shoulder and no defined role. I'll bet you can name that player.

Fair enough.

I’d bet a dollar to doughnuts that it was centered around Jose Iglesias, who is stalled at 9 rbi for the season and has been caught stealing on 4 of his last 5 attempts.

He made an insulting offer for King Felix.

Mark,

Be careful. The curse is a very powerful thing and has been known to backfire.

What, may I ask, did Andy do to warrant the curse?

Winick taught me how to do this. It's pretty cool. Jobu is not to be messed with.

It appears you wrote this *before* Longoria hurt his wrist. That's scary. Please put the voodoo doll away, Kerber!

Evan Longoria left Monday's game against the Nationals after being hit on the left wrist by a pitch.
It's the same wrist that's caused him to miss a few games this month.
