[USML Announce] Ohtani

Agree completely with what John wrote:
1) Ohtani or Brendan McKay or Hunter Greene etc. is one player with one salary2) owner has the freedom to toggle him between P and hitter each week, but stats count only for that chosen role for that period.
Clean and simple, right?

Seems if we were starting from scratch, separating Ohtani into pitcher Ohtani and hitter Ohtani would be the most consistent for salary and roster integrity.  If Jeff were amenable to separating them, and agree to only have the option of retaining one of them, we could take that up as a league option.  But since Jeff already has the combined Ohtani on his roster, seems he should have the right to let him toggle between active pitcher and active hitter just as other players who qualify at multiple positions,  obviously with caveat of only counting the stats for the position where he is active. Anxious to hear other opinions.

Here is the guidance from Onroto.  I think the long and short of this is we can do whatever we want, but please read and confirm:

This note is about Shohei Ohtani only.

Last month, we had some discussions with Brian Walton about how we plan to handle Ohtani for 2018, which Brian wrote up and published here: "Will Your League Make Ohtani a Two-Way Player in 2018?"

A couple of points of clarification/amplification:

1.   We assumed that we would get requests to handle Ohtani in every conceivable manner (and that's already proved to be true). The only way to program all the possible options is to create two distinct players, one the hitter Ohtani, and one the pitcher Ohtani. The pitcher Ohtani gets all and only Ohtani's pitching stats, and the hitter Ohtani will get all of Ohtani's hitting stats -- even on days when hitter Ohtani's fielding position is pitcher. HOWEVER... that doesn't mean that you won't be able to treat Ohtani as a single player on a single team -- you definitely will be able to do that. See below for the details.

2.   This is the most important point in this note: Each league will need to decide whether hitter Ohtani and pitcher Ohtani are truly distinct players -- like identical twins, who could be on different league teams, or if hitter Ohtani and pitcher Ohtani are tied together into just one player -- conjoined twins, as it were, who are owned by just one league team. IF YOU WANT THERE TO BE JUST ONE OHTANI, THE CONJOINED TWINS OPTION IS THE ONE YOU WANT. THIS OPTION WILL FUNCTIONEXACTLY AS THOUGH THERE WERE JUST ONE OHTANI.

If you select the "identical twins" options, you're done -- there are no further ramifications (you can elect to exclude one or the other of the twins from the league, but that's no different from the way you'd handle excluding any player). Note: "identical twins" Ohtani will be the default. If you want to use this option, you won't need to do anything.

3.   If you select the "conjoined twins" option however, there are a few other things to consider. (Note, because of the way we will need to program this, the league team which owns Ohtani will see both the hitter Ohtani and the pitcher Ohtani on his roster -- but that's just a programming artifact.) Leagues will need to decide:

1.   Can his owner start both hitter Ohtani and pitcher Ohtani at the same time? We will definitely allow Ohtani's owner to start either hitter Ohtani or pitcher Ohtani, flipping from week to week, if you like -- but what about using both hitter and pitcher Ohtani as active at same time? Note that if your league does decide to allow the both at once option, when his owner elects to do this, hitter Ohtani will have to take up an active hitter slot (UT/DH or OF if he plays there) and pitcher Ohtani will have to take up an active pitcher slot. In other words, if you want both his hitting and pitching stats during the same transaction period (day or week or other), you need to use up two of your active line-up slots.

2.   Related to the above, if you have the "conjoined twin" Ohtanis in your league, you will need to decide if he counts as one reserve slot or two. If your league decided to go with "either hitter Ohtani or pitcher Ohtani can be active, but not both" in the previous section, then we think it reasonable to treat the Ohtanis as just one player as far as roster limits go -- i.e., if hitter Ohtani is active, pitcher Ohtani does not count as a reserve, since you can't use both of them at the same time anyway. If you do permit owners to use hitter Ohtani and pitcher Ohtani in their starting line-up at the same time, then it seems fair that they should each always take up their own roster slot, regardless of whether they are active or reserved.

As always, though, if you want to do things differently than we've suggested, we'll work with you to implement your preferences.

4.   If you use a salary cap and elect the "conjoined twins" path, some of this gets even more complicated. Does each Ohtani get the full salary, or is it split? If one is active but not the other, how much of his salary counts again the cap? And if you have an active line-up cap and a total roster cap, which Ohtani counts how much against which cap?

That's the gist of the Ohtani issue (we hope we're not missing anything significant, at least). The main thing to decide is whether the two Ohtanis can play on different teams or if they are tied together.

Thanks again to everyone for your comments and suggestions, and please contact us at support at onroto.comfor any questions or support issues.

I think we should treat this the same as any other case of multiple position eligibility, including on draft day.  If I can move a guy from OF to 2B during the draft, why not P to DH?

That seems fine to me with one clarification.  I think that he needs to be declared one way or the other for draft day purposes.  In other words, I don't think you should be able to start with Ohtani in a pitcher's roster slot and then flip him over to the offense side once if you end up with nine pitchers and want to start bidding for another  (or visa versa if you fill all your offense slots).

Once the season starts, though, I think it's fair that can place him at P or UT depending on the week.

We're now close enough to the draft that we need to resolve how Mr. Ohtani is going to be treated.

I believe that our rules ought to treat him in the same manner as ESPN and CBS Sportsline.  In those leagues, he is regarded as one player who qualifies as either a pitcher or a UT hitter.  He can be played in one or the other slots, but not in both.

There are limitless alternatives (for example, in the XFL, my experts league, he is treated as one player that qualifies as either a pitcher or a UT hitter, but can be played as both simultaneously).  But it appears that the industry consensus is the approach taken by CBS and ESPN.

I'd like to propose this as an option.  If anyone would like to propose an alternative, please do so and then we can have a league vote.  Thanks.

Jeff
