Buxton's woes aside (sorry, Jim!) ... I don't see any other way to do it besides what Buddha suggested.

I don’t want to be forced to keep Buxton another year on the terrible LT contract I got stuck with as part of a trade 2 years ago!

 How about this suggestion.
If MLB crowns a champion we do.     If they do not all rosters revert back to where they were leaving the 2020 draft.
Trades are reversed.   FAAB buys never happened.

We all know that in 1994 we crowned an Asterisk (i.e., non-real) Champion. No reason to revisit that 26 years later.

That is a good point ... I can see the argument, then, for having contracts roll regardless.

We did crown a champion in 1994, though some unnamed members of the league tried to attach an asterisk to it.  :)

But I now think Buddha is raising a good point: how do we play the season and plan trades when we have to keep two potential outcomes (season or no season) in mind?

I wasn't in the league in 1994, but how did we resolve things then? Did we crown a champion because a lot of the season was already played? How much season is needed to count as a season?

I vote for keeping contracts at 2020 status if the season does not conclude (e.g., meaning that MLB crowns a champion).  I'll also vote for 9+3 keepers.

I think we all agree on that point, Mark. The question is what happens to contracts if we don't finish the season.

If we finish the season, there's no reason to push out the contracts. We've had multiple shortened seasons over the years (previously due to labor issues) and we've never modified the contracts.  This is no different.

So it seems a consensus builds that unless MLB crowns s champ we will not.

I agree we keep the keepers at 9+3.    And to be uniform if the season is cancelled or makes it to completion I think we roll contracts.     Otherwise you don’t know what you’re trading away or trading for ??

I agree with Buddha we should decide on the rules soon, because it does impact team that want to dump for 2020 (parting with cheap FAs is less attractive if they can potentially be retained for 2021).

Also, while I hear Frank’s point, I am opposed to expanding the number of keepers if the season is cancelled.  Our 9+3 is plenty.

Hi everyone,

Prompted by Andy's mail: I also agree that we should MLB be the guide. If they complete a season and call it official, so should we. Likewise, it seems that they are going to make all reasonable efforts to complete the season.

If the season is cancelled, I think the approach Jeff suggested (which I wholeheartedly support) is that we choose keepers from the 2020 rosters with the same contract status. An FA, Y2 etc. in 2020 keeps the same contract status at the same salary in 2021.

The rationale for a few more keepers is simple: preserving some integrity of the 2020 rosters and the planning behind them.

I think many if not all of us plan our draft days and construct our rosters on the assumption that FA's will roll off the books, that some beans will graduate (or fade), and we take some risks on other players. That's why we have a keeper league to begin with. If we are taking steps to preserve 2020 if the season is cancelled, we should allow teams to keep a few extra players.

Having said that, I agree with Andy in hoping the point is moot.

I was away when the conversation started, but agree with Buddha that if MLB completes the season, ours should count as a regular campaign with all contracts moving along as normal.  We have done that with other odd seasons (like strike years), though admittedly, nothing is like this one.

I am inclined toward Jeff's view that if the season is cancelled, we choose keepers from our current (2020) rosters when we draft for 2021.  Unclear if this means that contracts roll forward a year, and don't really have a strong opinion on that.  Frank had suggested increasing the number of keepers.  Interested in his view of why ... though hoping it will all be moot.

I'm actually more optimistic today than I was last week that they will play out the season.  The outbreaks seem to be contained to teams where players broke protocol, and nothing suggests they are passing the virus to one another on the field.  I also read that, overall, MLB has administered 11,000+ tests with only about 30 positives.  Surely they can figure out how to make it work at that level.  Seems they'll have to add a few weeks to the regular season in October to even out the number of games played, keep rosters expanded, and prepare for the possibility of ending the season for a team or two (like MLS did).  But there is a lot of money at stake.  Plus the Cubs are 7-2.  So let's play on, damn it!

What did we decide ??  Did we??
Does the AL have to complete their season for ours to be official??
Does our season end if/when Rob Manfred calls it a day and we use those standings?
Will we roll rosters and contracts now no matter what ??
We should make a determination as it matters RE:Trades
