Latest buzz is that they’ll ratify today, move Opening Day to April 5, and play all 162 games by scheduling 9-inning doubleheaders.

That means free agency and trades could kick off tonight and players start reporting as early as tomorrow.

So no worries!

  I am writing with an update on plans for the USML season. As all of you have read, it appears likely that both spring training and the start of the season may be delayed. Some are projecting that the season may not start until May. As a result, we need to do some contingency planning to address the delayed start. Here is a tentative plan for consideration, which I have discussed with a subset of league owners.

1.  Draft: The draft will proceed as scheduled on Sunday, March 27, 2022 (Mark K: put this date in your calendar).  Given that we have 11 owners, finding a future date on short notice when 11 different people can block off a big chunk of time seems unlikely.

2.  Auction/Draft eligible players:  There are a sizeable number of players who remain free agents because of the timing of the lockout. Some of those players have values vastly in excess of their salary in a rotation draft. This has happened in the past, but never in the sort of numbers that exist now. As a result, the current thinking is that we will exclude those players from the auction and the rotation draft.  A sample:  Freddie Freeman, Trevor Story, Kris Bryant, Nick Castellanos, Kyle Schwarber, Kyle Seager, Anthony Rizzo, Jorge Soler, Jonathan Villar, Tommy Pham, Eddie Rosario, Josh Harrison, Nelson Cruz, Carlos Correa, Clayton Kershaw, Carlos Rodon, and Zack Greinke.

3.  Supplemental Draft:  The current thinking is that we will take the Excluded Players and have a short supplemental auction/draft. The precise contours are not yet determined; we are assembling a list to determine the best path.  If we have an auction for those players, they will be tradeable. If we have a draft for those players, then they will not be tradeable. Whether auction or draft, the thinking is that they will not be retainable. Also, if one of the Excluded Players is currently eligible for retention on a USML roster, we will have some system for right of first refusal.

  Two important points.  First, none of this is set in stone; comments are welcome on these proposals. Second, I recognize that none of this is ideal, but we are an adaptable group and I am sure we can find an acceptable solution.
