Baseball: Giambi to be tested for serious illness
2004-07-26 11:25 (New York)

Toronto, ON, Jul 26, 2004 (The Sports Network via COMTEX) -- New York Yankees
first baseman Jason Giambi is expected to undergo more tests on his current
intestinal parasite condition.

Giambi, who could miss the rest of the season because of the illness, has been
sidelined four of the last five games for New York.

The Newark Star-Ledger is reporting that Giambi is being tested for entamoeba
histolytica, a parasite that can cause a potentially fatal condition called
amebiasis. It can be transmitted through water and food before poisoning the
intestinal lining.

Giambi, a former AL MVP, has appeared in just 70 games this season. The 34-
year-old slugger is hitting only .221 with 11 homers and 36 RBI.
