Mark:
I understand the point you and so many other naysayers make. But, please,
hear me out: I much prefer to have a highly touted player like Justin learn
the major league ropes during a year in which I'm rebuilding my roster (much
like Andy, except that some of my keepers are (i) cheaper and (ii) actually
play in the majors). That way I'll know what I have (or don't have) going
into the 2007 season, rather than taking a substantial risk I cannot
afford (ala Casey Kotchman, Craig Hansen, A.J. Burnett, etc.). I don't
care if the contract's running; after all, in Huber's case it's only $2
anyway, and all I care about is getting a decent return on my investment
(whether it's a $2 stud like Kendrick or Huber or a $26 horse like Thome).
As our Mutual Friend Jeff Winick will tell us, it's all about the
undervalue, irrespective of the contract year.
Anyway, I must go now and check out the Minor League site for my latest
Craig Hansen update. I'm sure Andy's quite excited about Papelbon's blown
save last night...
