[USML Announce] Just Trying to Be Helpful

By intuitive, I was talking about the labels for contract status and the way
we go about entering FAAB bids. It makes no sense to me that a player in
the first year of his contract has an S2 status (two full seasons after the
current one) while a player on a long term contract with a single year
remaining after the current season has status L2.

I'm still confused as to how to properly enter multiple bids with
overlapping players to get the right result or how to deal with situations
where there might be leftover money. As an example of the second, I bid $90
Saltalamacchia over the weekend. I didn't know if I had any ability to
enter a bid on Wheeler that would use excess funds remaining if I got Salty.
I wasn't even sure if that kind of bid was permitted. Based on Jeff's
summary to Rick as to how his bids worked, it sounds like I might have been
able to make the kind of bid I had in mind.

In the end, I'm basically agreeing with Jeff, i.e., that the new system
doesn't seem to be a dramatic improvement and that we should explore
alternatives.

One other comment is necessary. My guess is that other than the Gaudin
glitch (and Mark's bizarre hangup about it) almost every other problem
relates to our use of automated transactions.

The league got used to taking advantage of Mark B's willingness to trudge
through pages of transactions to arrive at the "intuitive" result that Rich
is looking for.

Truth be told, unless we know another website that is willing to offer us
the services of an Harvard educated lawyer to sort out our transactions,
we're going to be frustrated no matter where we move.

And to all of you who checked the website at 12:01 yesterday to see who got
whom, keep in mind that such instant results weren't available using TQ
Stats and won't be available that quickly absent the use of automation and
all its associated frustrations.

I do, however share the general sentiment that the $50 premium doesn't seem
to have bought us much, so I'll start looking for alternatives.

I too am not happy with the web site.? There's too much I find
counter-intuitive.? I would welcome a discussion of alternatives.

In a message dated 8/5/2007 5:37:25 PM Central Daylight Time,
jhwinick at aol.com writes: Ah, but I'd did have FAAB dollars left since the
successful bid on Betemit was 34, leaving me with 43 dollars left.

I had been led to believe that a blockbuster trade was imminent with
Blocker. Guess you're going to ride it out. Since Brad long ago annointed
you as champ, I can't imagine there's anything to worry about.

Good luck.

All:

? Just back from the remote woods of Northern Wisconsin.? I can confirm that
I had trade talks with various teams, making my long drive home today much
more enjoyable.? An actual quote from my wife at 12:12 p.m.:? "Well, the
deadline has passed."
?
? With regard to Jeff's message above, I was wondering how we should handle
the various bids/results of the weekend.? Some of Jeff's bids show up on the
evaluator results as "over limit."? Jeff may well be correct in the message
above about how to treat those bids, but I was wondering if others share
that view.
?
? I will offer one observation here that I think Jeff's e-mail points up: I
think the All Star Stats website was not worth the extra money we paid.? I
think it could well be a fine system for other leagues, but I think it is
ill-suited to our rules, particularly the e-bay style FAAB bidding.? In
addition, lets not forget the many start-up issues we experienced at the
beginning of the season.? Once the current season concludes, we should have
a discussion about whether to return to TQ Stats, or some other cheaper
alternative.? Just one person's opinion.
