DRAFT DAY STRATEGY
1. Play it safe - build upon solid retention roster by drafting
relatively safe players - avoid prospects and injury risks in the
auction.
2. Buy at bats - save enough money for late in the draft to make sure
I don't get stuck with part time (or worse) players in the starting
lineup.
3. Bid up the big bats to take $$'s of the table.
4. Find a seat away from Brad Lee to avoid the distractions associated
with Brad's constant questions.
5. Get a second closer from the top 3 available (Soria, Valverde and
Thornton) at a reasonable price.
6. Build a solid pitching staff if pitching salaries stay low.

WHAT WENT RIGHT
1. Top dollars spent on relatively safe guys like Kendrick, Markakis
and Swisher. Check
2. Filled nearly all offensive slots and all of pitching slots with
full time players. Check
3. Fielder $41, Pujols $46, Cabrera $43, Longoria $39, Teixeira $35,
Hamilton $32, Choo $31. Check
4. Find a seat away from Brad Lee. Was working like a charm until he
pathetically sat on the floor and forced an invitation to sit right
next to me. Fail.
5. Thornton $16. Check.
6. Scherzer $18, Peavy $9, Slowey $4, Davis $1. Check.

WHAT WENT WRONG
1. Allowed Kerber to bid me up 3 separate times without ever returning
the favor. Cost me $6 and invaluable pride.
2. Got stuck with Plouffe, Izturis and Cowgill at the end of the draft
- not exactly secure playing time.
3. $25 on Youkilis. Is there any player in the AL that is a greater
injury risk that isn't already injured?
4. Allowed the young guy to mess with my mojo - inexcusable.
5. Failed to deliver a single pithy one liner in Brad Lee's direction
- embarrassing.
6. Actually drafted a nice reserve roster for the young guy who messed
with my mojo - WTF was I thinking?

Announce] 2012 Draft Day Self-Analysis: BratsDraft day strategy;Obtain
one of the big boppers at 1B at a reasonable pay-up to Miguel Cabrera's
$39 retention salary, swear off Justin Morneau, and to keep the country
music background noise to a hushed level so as not to incur the wrath
of Dennis and Doug. Given a decent retention roster, make relatively
safe picks. What went right; Not much. Cabrera at $43 is what I would
have expected and so was fine with that. Although I didn't really need
starting pitching, Morrow at $18, Masterson at $12, and Pavano in the
rotation draft should make for a relatively good starting staff. What
went wrong;Overpaying for Cespedes ($25) and M. Brantley ($18)at OF
when guys like Nelson Cruz and Nick Markakis went for $28 and $23
respectively. Planned on being able to get back the un-retained JJ
Hardy for his $19 retention price but then didn't pull the trigger and
ended up with A. Escobar at $20, who is likely to disappoint. Finally,
ended up with too many longshots in the saves department, and spent
handsomely to do so, a combined $18 on Pestano, Glenn Perkins and Joey
Devine. And Brandon Allen at Ute most certainly was not a safe pick,
but more likely a Kila Ka'auhui starter kit.-----Original

3/12 6:49:28 OK, I'll try.Draft Day Strategy:Don't over-study. Clear
my mind. Let the Zen of the moment guide my thoughts and actions.See
if Brad will still do the Robertson/Salty deal so I can get out of the
catcher mosh pit.Get some quality hitters.Don't buy a second
established closer (unless I get one cheap), but pick up some quality
arms that could fall into some saves. What went right:Nailed the Zen
thing. Had a long bike ride and a nice Italian dinner on Saturday.
Knew nothing on Sunday. Ignorance is beautiful.Got the deal done.
Didn't have to buy a catcher. (Waiting to see a constitutional
amendment proposed to outlaw future pre-draft deals.) Got plenty of
power at least.I think I got that last one done. Check with me in
August.Herrera (1), Porcello (4).What went wrong:Ended up with about 12
guys I know absolutely nothing about. Who are these guys?Didn't get a
deal done with Robbins at the end of the draft. I was shooting for
bookend trades.Got 14 clones of Rob Deer. Looking at an all-time
franchise record for lowest BA.Ate both a chocolate donut and a jelly
donut at the same draft--donut equivalent of meat and dairy.Konerko
(26), Jeter (21), Reynolds (18)--WTF?-----Original Message-----From:

Announce] 2012 Draft Day Self-Analysis: RiptornsGreat to see everyone.
Dennis, welcome my friend to the show that never ends. Jim B, congrats
and all the best to your wife and you. And to everybody else, it was
great to see everyone looking so moderately healthy. Now, let me propose
something. This proposal certainly is not intended to displace
Jeffrey's typically self-serving analysis of the draft, but I ask each
team to consider posting its own critical and objective analysis of its
draft day performance. I will begin:DRAFT DAY STRATEGY: * Avoid
drafting Shoppach and Cervelli again. * Corner the market on SB by
getting one more impact SB guy. * Draft decent SP for under $20. *
Draft one reasonably priced thumper. * Pick up enough sleepers and
keepers via auction and rotation draft to shop to Winick when his team
crashes and burns in June.WHAT WENT RIGHT * Arrived too late to gorge
on doughnuts. * Personally escorted to draft by always affable Mark
Kerber. * Elvis at 27, nice SPs from 7 to 17. * Restocked the
Prospect Parade (Segura-1, yes!!).WHAT WENT WRONG * Arrived too late
to gorge on doughnuts. * Personally escorted to draft by always
affable Mark Kerber. * Lind-21, Smoak-12, no thumpers and Andrus
surrounded by the likes of Getz and Brignac.OK--who's next??
