PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. -- Red Sox designated hitter David Ortiz will be shut down for the next 5-7 days after an MRI showed inflammation in the bony area of his right heel, manager John Farrell said Sunday afternoon.

Farrell said it is "highly unlikely" Ortiz will be ready for the start of the season.

Ortiz has been feeling discomfort and had MRIs taken of both heels, particularly the right one, which he originally injured last July. After being hurt, he missed all but one game of the remainder of the 2012 season.

Farrell said Ortiz will have no physical activities during his rest period and will take anti-inflammatory medicine.
