CLEARWATER, Fla. -- Derek
Jeter<http://espn.go.com/mlb/player/_/id/3246/derek-jeter>was a late
scratch from the
Yankees <http://espn.go.com/mlb/team/_/name/nyy/new-york-yankees> lineup
Tuesday with what manager Joe Girardi called a"cranky'' left ankle.

Jeter broke the ankle last October and underwent surgery for the insertion
of a metal plate and screws to mend the injury. His spring training had
proceeded essentially without incident until now, raising concerns the
38-year-old shortstop might not be ready for Opening Day.

*LOSER*

Angry Young Men. 13 is an unlucky number, especially when that is the
amount paid on an aging, injured shortstop playing atop screws and metal
plates. Latest setback casts pall on an already gloomy forecast for the AYM.

*WINNER*

Riptorns. Savvy pickup of Jason Nix in rotation draft will pay dividends
for Rips as Nix claims the Yankees' SS gig and bolsters an already awesome
Rips' MI.
