[USML Announce] Woodn't It Be Nice

I don't usually check baseball news during the offseason. But who
really cares about football when the only good teams are the Packers and
Cowboys? And with Jeff and Brad laying the puffery groundwork for a
Brandon Wood-tradeback deal, it seemed prudent to take a look. Some
very interesting results ...

First, Brandon Wood was indeed mentioned in Miguel Cabrera trade talks.
Apparently the Angels are begging the Marlins to take him, but Florida
is holding out for Howie "Punch n' Judy" Kendrick.

Second, with Orlando Cabrera gone, the Angels are indeed talking about
his replacement -- Erik Aybar. Who will compete with Maicer Izturis for
the job. Lots of confidence in young Brandon there!

Third, Wood is playing in some freakin' Mexican League this winter,
mired in an 0-21 slump with 11 Ks in 28 AB.

Come 'on boys. If you're gonna stir the hot stove pot, you've *got* to
do better than this!

Angels manager Mike Scioscia indicated that Erick Aybar is the favorite
to play shortstop for his team with Orlando Cabrera gone.
Maicer Izturis should get to compete for the job, and the Angels could
resume using Brandon Wood at the position in Triple-A. "We are very
confident in what Erick Aybar brings not only in the future, but right
now," Scioscia said. What Aybar has brought so far is a .239/.274/.295
line in 234 at-bats over the last two seasons. The 23-year-old should
turn into a decent regular in time, but the Angels may find they're
better off with Izturis next year.

Since opening the season 4-for-7, Brandon Wood is in an 0-for-21 slump
in Mexico.
This isn't helping Wood's trade value. He's yet to deliver an extra-base
hit, and he has an 11/3 K/BB ratio in 28 at-bats.

The Angels are showing the heaviest interest in Miguel Cabrera,
according to FOXSports.com's Ken Rosenthal.
The Marlins are insisting that Howie Kendrick be involved in the deal,
which is smart on their part. If they received him, they could move Dan
Uggla to third base and improve their infield defense considerably. The
Angels would prefer to make Brandon Wood a center piece of the deal. If
they could get Cabrera for Wood, Ervin Santana and Jeff Mathis, they'd
have to jump. The Marlins, though, should target Jered Weaver over
Santana if they're not going to get Kendrick.
