From AP wires….
Berliners owner Jeffrey Winick, in an apparent downward spiral as his USML season stumbles to a close, continues to make embarrassing comments about the league and his fellow owners, to the point where League czar Mark Blocker is contemplating corrective action, including discipline up to and including institutionalization.
“It began with Winick’s offensive comment about Matt Wieters etched into his forehead,” stated Blocker, who witnessed a video of Winick stumbling out of a swanky Near North nightclub shortly after lunch hour last week. “Then, those topless photos of Winick frolicking with a toyboat in his bathtub surfaced yesterday. But this latest incident tops them all.”
Blocker referred to a video of Winick addressing an annual convention of ultrawealthy fantasy baseball geeks in Scottsdale last October. In the video, the first part of which was published on Monday by the liberal Mother Jansen magazine, Winick tells his cohorts that 47 percent of the USML will trade with the Riptorns no matter what and “my job is not to worry about those people.”
He said they do not pay their annual USML fees and are people “who are dependent upon the Riptorns, who believe that they are victims, who believe that the Rips have a responsibility to care for them.”
The camera appears to be hidden behind Rich Robbins’ photo collection of race car tires and shows Winick addressing at least half a dozen people who are sitting eating. Waiters, some wearing baseball gloves, serve the guests.
Winick also told the audience that the Bombers have no interest in pursuing any trades with him and achieving a separate peace with them would not be possible.”I look at the Bombers not wanting to make trades anyway, for political purposes, committed to the destruction and elimination of the Berliners, and these thorny issues, and I say there’s just no way,” Winick said.
The video unleashed a fresh wave of criticism from some USML owners who were already frustrated by Winick’s failure to capitalize on his struggling cheap keepers and a high Riptorns’ trade rate.
